Study reveals St. Clair, Madison Counties have a high number of drunk drivers
Both Madison and St. Clair Counties rank in the top one-third for the number of DUI arrests in Illinois.
The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, a nonprofit citizens’ action group, recently listed the counties in Illinois with the highest number of DUI arrests. The results revealed that both Madison and St. Clair Counties have a high number of intoxicated drivers on the road. Madison County ranked 17 th overall for DUI arrests, while St. Clair County was 11 th on the list.
Nationally, the number of intoxicated drivers on the road is down in recent years. However, the problem is still serious in St. Clair and Madison Counties, as even one injury or death caused by drunk driving is too many. And while the number of drunk driving arrests is a good indicator that drunk driving is still a problem, the number of arrests does not tell the whole story. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, each day 300,000 people in the U.S. drive drunk, while only 4,000 of those are arrested. Going by those numbers, hundreds and even thousands of drunk drivers are endangering Illinois roadways but never arrested.
Most tragically, every day 28 people die because of drunk driving, while many more are injured. Because of drunk driving accidents, the U.S. loses nearly $200 billion annually in lost wages, medical expenses, and other costs associated with a drunk driving accident.
Drunk driving increases the risk of an accident – by a significant margin
A recent study by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration showed just how dangerous drunk driving can be. Even just one or two drinks can affects a person’s ability to drive. In the study, drivers with a blood alcohol content of .05 doubled their chance of an accident, while drivers at .08 or above quadrupled the risk. Drivers with a BAC of .2 or above were nearly 25 times more likely to be in an accident than sober drivers. Considering the number of drunk drivers on the road in St. Clair and Madison Counties, the data is frightening.
