Even though summer is winding down, pool safety remains a must

The official start of the school year has recently begun. This means school buses and walking children are once again a regular sight, while playgrounds and ball fields will sit largely empty.

However, until the first bell rings, kids across Illinois will be out taking full advantage of their waning days of freedom and the warm temperatures, including hitting area swimming pools.

Safety experts are warning parents to remain vigilant when it comes to pool safety -- even if their children recently passed their swimming lessons or have been poolside fixtures over the last three months.

This advice makes sense when you stop to consider that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission had found that drowning is currently the second leading cause of death among all children between the ages of five and 14.

More than anything, safety experts advise parents to resist the temptation to become distracted while their kids are in the pool, leaving safety duties solely to the lifeguards. Indeed, they are advised to keep eyes on them at all times, and keep both books and smartphones tucked away.

As for children, the experts have a few essential safety tips that they say should be regularly reinforced by parents concerning pool safety:

  • Don't swim near open drains and tie back long hair to avoid entrapment
  • Don't scale gates, fences and other barriers meant to block access to closed swimming pools
  • Don't swim without supervision present

It's important for those families whose lives have been forever altered by the negligence of a homeowner -- dog attack, swimming pool accident or dangerous conditions -- to understand that they have rights and they have options for seeking justice.
