Top Halloween safety tips for pedestrians and drivers

With Halloween coming soon, kids may already be giddy with the anticipation of donning costumes and getting candy while strolling through their neighborhood. With this highly anticipated event, drivers throughout St. Louis County must be careful about seeing (and avoiding) pedestrians. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of children killed in car-pedestrian accidents spikes on Halloween, because more little ones are walking neighborhoods at night.

Because of this, there are a number of precautions that drivers and pedestrians can take in order to be safe.

Wear reflective strips or bright colors – Drivers are more likely to see costumes with reflective panels or outfits that have bright colors. Essentially, bright butterflies and neon-clad clowns are better seen than ninjas and zombies.

Be wary of sharp turns and blind corners – In these areas, drivers have a tougher time seeing someone compared to straight streets.

Look both ways before crossing a street – It may seem obvious, but it is unfortunate how many children are hit after running into the street without doing so.

Make sure your lights are on – It is surprising how many accidents occur when a driver does not have their headlights on, only to say that they did not see the other car (or person) they hit.

Limit distractions – For drivers, this means that you should put the cell phone down, even if you are driving slowly and following your kids as they Trick-or-Treat.

Don’t drink and drive – Again, another obvious no-no, but it is not uncommon for people to have one too many at a Halloween party and think they are okay to drive when they are not.

If you have the misfortune of being involved in an accident on Halloween, an experienced personal injury lawyer can advise you of your legal rights.
