IKEA recalls dressers, cites dangerous tipping hazard

You just moved into your first home. It's exciting but also a little daunting--it's by far the biggest financial investment you've ever made in your life. Your wallet is noticeably lighter than it was, and you still have an entire house to furnish. How do you fill up your new space on a budget?

If you're like many new homeowners, you may turn to garage sales or thrift stores. And if you have your heart set on new furniture, you'll probably also hit up discount furniture stores--like IKEA. This Swedish furniture company is able to keep their prices low by selling their furniture disassembled in a warehouse setting. You haul it home and put it together yourself.

If you can outfit your guest bedroom for half the regular price, you're willing to invest a little elbow grease into the process. You open up the box and closely follow the instructions for assembly. Once put together, you naturally assume that your new décor is now safe to use.

Not so fast. If you bought one of IKEA's recently recalled MALM dressers, you could have a serious safety hazard on your hands. This series of dressers has a high likelihood of tipping over when the drawers are opened. This defect is especially dangerous if you have any small children in your house. To date, 91 children in the U.S. have been injured and eight have died from MALM dressers that tipped over.

In response to the defect, IKEA has offered to refund any MALM dressers or provide wall-mounting kits to any of its customers. However, if you or a loved one has already been injured from such faulty furniture, a simple refund will not suffice. It's important to consult with an experienced product liability attorney about your legal recourse. You could be eligible for compensation.
